Die Deutsche Musik

Look at the history of German music at one of the links highlighted in this wiki for a brief history of the many different genres of music that are peculiar to Germany. We will be taking a look and listening to everything from "classical" to modern German hip hop, alpine horns to German reggae.

  1. Take a close look at Step Into German. Look closely at one page with all of the its links and be prepared to give an overview to class, showing the highlights, giving your opinions of the site, what was useful, what was new and interesting?
  2. Peruse the link to the right (see Radio Goethe), and listen to the podcasts on iTunes, or other online radio stations for at least a half an hour. Be prepared to participate fully in a class discussion about this unique German radio program.
  3. Take a close look at Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's Three Penny Opera (die Dreigroschenoper). Peruse the website at home (it is blocked in the district), and be able to give an overview. Who was Bertolt Brecht? Have you ever heard the song, Mack the Knife? Find it and listen to it. Do you recognize it? Who made this song famous in the 60's? In a brief summary, what was this modern opera about? Why was it so famous? Be prepared to contribute to class discussion.
  4. Spend some time looking at the timeline of German music (see links above), and begin looking for the song, genre, band, composer, etc. that you want to highlight for your final project.
  5. For an overview of the different German music styles, including, but not limited to Schlager, Liedermacher, Volksmusik, click here. Be prepared to tell us about a genre that we have not spoken of much in class, and be ready to participate intelligently and thoughtfully in a class discussion.

Acappella Project: You will pick one song from either the Wise Guys or die Prinzen and be teacher of the day. Have your lesson plan well prepared and include the following points:

1) present to class with German lyrics and the English meaning or lyrics;

2) present an explanation of the meaning of the song, (whether just a summary, the cultural meaning, or whatever you intend to highlight in the following bullet);

3) make it clear to your audience that this is how you would use it as a teaching tool, if you were a German teacher.

Daily Song Presentation: You must choose one German song you would like to present to the class during the unit, using an audio or video clip, and lyrics on the overhead projector for entire class to see. This song should be something different and unique to the class. There are many, many different styles of music from which to choose.Then lead a discussion in German about the song, genre, band, etc. We will cover many different genres, so find a song early on in the unit. (Each student should pick a different piece of music.)

Singing Presentation: You may choose any German song of your liking, and sing it out loud with other classmates, karaoke style, or solo. It can be with instrumentation, if you so desire. You will have up to a month to prepare for this assignment.
